Why Rise Academy?

For Parents and Carers

We know it is hard for young people to decide on where their future career paths might lie and even harder for parents to understand what steps they should take if they are not working within that chosen industry themselves. We also know that many people generally do not know about the breadth of roles that exist across the media technology industry.

This is where the rise academy can help. The media technology industry is currently experiencing a severe skills crisis, as well as having a lack of young diverse talent entering the industry. We want to open doors for young people and support them as they navigate and understand which part of the media technology industry they might want to work in.

We do this through;

  • Workshops
  • Summer Schools
  • Mentoring
  • Events
  • Pointing to work experience, job opportunities and further education.

Our goals:

  • To open up career possibilities in media technology
  • To make our workshops and summer school accessible to all
  • To support parents to understand what next steps to take

We take the safety and well-being of the young people using our services seriously. Volunteers at our workshops, events and summer schools adhere to our stringent safeguarding policies and procedures, including being DBS checked. For more information click here for our full Safeguarding Procedures.

For Schools

The rise academy delivers hands on practical workshops where young people get to build a TV studio from scratch, working in teams across;

  • Camera
  • Sound
  • Vision
  • VT & graphics
  • Comms.

We work with Years 5 through to Year 13;

  • For years 5 & 6 students we offer one day workshops, for 30 students.
  • For years 7 – 13 we can deliver 2 workshops in one day with 30 students in each.

We bring the kit to your school and a team of industry volunteers who will lead the students through each element of building the kit. Students will learn about the media technology behind the screen, as well developing their communication, problem solving and team work skills. We will also spend some time talking to the students about careers in the industry and what pathways they might take once they leave secondary education.

“As a school, we work with a large number of external companies that provide opportunities for our students, but rise academy has set a new standard in delivery and quality of experience. I was so impressed with the planning, resources, structure and outcomes from working with rise academy. Our students had a brilliant time, gaining new skills and insights about the Media and Broadcast industry. The staff and volunteers were so professional and supportive with our students. Thank you to Rise Up for a genuinely excellent week.”

“In an industry that leans heavily on both who and what you know, it’s so refreshing to see an initiative that aims to get more diversity into broadcast.

The response from the students was overwhelmingly positive. At a surface level, the activity was a lot of fun, but scratch below that surface and there was something really special going on: these students were taking the initiative, problem solving and discovering that broadcast careers can be fun and rewarding.

It’s true that you get out what you put in. As a volunteer, I enjoyed every moment and I thank Rise for leading on this inspiring programme.”
